Appointment will be made on the Medical Scientist Scale (€45,279 - €73,721, LSI1 €75,148) at a point in line with Government pay policy

Hours of work: 

Full-Time, 35 hours per week

Responsibilities

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • To participate in the laboratory working roster encompassing working hours and luncheon intervals.
  • Reports to the Chief Medical Scientist in the Histo/neuropathology Department and/or report on a day to day basis to the designated Senior Medical Scientist in charge.
  • To perform the Histo/neuropathology work to the highest professional standards as determined by the Consultant in Charge/Chief Medical Scientist.
  • Participate in training staff and students as required.
  • Ensure in co-operation with the Consultant in Charge/Chief Medical Scientist /designated senior staff, appropriate compliance with International and National Guidelines and Standards for the provision of Histo/neuropathology Lab service and actively participate in Internal and External Quality Control.
  • Actively participate in and promote continuing education and research activities consistent with the post.
  • Co-operate in evaluating equipment, consumables and research projects.
  • Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient or Hospital information.
  • The chosen candidate will participate in ensuring that effective safety procedures are in place to comply with Health and Safety at Work Act.
  • Assist and co-operate with the Laboratory Management team in developing procedures to be followed in preventing and managing accidents occurring in the work area.
  • To prepare and stain specimens for histological evaluation, according to standard operational procedures.
  • To perform such other duties appropriate to the office as may be assigned to him/her by an officer designated by the Board in consultation with the Consultant in Charge/Chief Medical Scientist/Senior in charge. As per MF-GEN-0098 contained in staff members training folder.
  • To comply with the requirements of ISO15189 during all activities carried out in the department.

Qualifications

Selection Criteria: 

Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post.

Mandatory:

  1. Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc

(a) Candidates for appointment must:

(i) Be registered, or be eligible for registration, on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU.

OR

(ii) Applicants who satisfy the conditions set out in Section 91 of the Health and Social Care Professionals Act 2005, (see note 1 below*), must submit proof of application for registration with the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU.

The acceptable proof is correspondence from the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU confirming their application for registration as a Section 91 applicant was received by the 30th March 2021.

AND

(iii) Have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.

AND

(iv) Provide proof of Statutory Registration on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU before a contract of employment can be issued. Applicable to Section 38 applicants only). 

2. Annual registration * (Applicable to Section 38 Applicants only*)

(i) On appointment practitioners must maintain annual registration on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU.

AND

(ii) Practitioners must confirm annual registration with CORU to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC).

 

 

If an appointee has previously been employed in the Civil or Public Service and that appointee is entitled to or in receipt of a pension from the Civil or Public Service or where a Civil/ Public Service pension comes into payment during the appointee’s re-employment that pension will be subject to abatement in accordance with Section 52 of the Public Service Pensions (Single Scheme and other Provisions) Act 2012.
